Studio Gemological Laboratory is owned and operated by Orin J. Mazzoni III, a third-generation jeweler, professional gemologist, and jewelry appraisal specialist with more than 25 years of experience in fine jewelry, diamonds, and gemstone evaluation.

About the Gemologist

Orin J. Mazzoni, III is a third-generation jewelry professional whose career spans gemology, appraisal, retail jewelry, and visual storytelling. Raised in the world of fine jewelry, Orin developed an early fluency in gemstones, precious metals, and craftsmanship that has shaped his work for more than two decades.

He is a Graduate Gemologist (GG), having completed his studies at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 1999, where he received comprehensive training in diamond grading, gemstone identification, and gemological analysis. His approach to appraisal is grounded in traditional gemological standards, current market research, and hands-on experience evaluating fine jewelry across a wide range of styles and periods.

Orin spent many years working at Orin Jewelers, where he was deeply involved in the evaluation, sale, and representation of fine jewelry and timepieces. His experience in a retail environment provided a practical understanding of how jewelry is bought, sold, insured, and valued in real-world markets — insight that now informs his independent appraisal work.

Orin Jewelers was founded in 1933 by Orin’s grandfather and has remained a family-owned business for generations. Growing up within this legacy, Orin was influenced not only by the technical aspects of jewelry, but by the standards of trust, continuity, and client relationships established by his father, Orin J. Mazzoni, Jr., which define long-standing independent jewelers. Today, the business continues under the leadership of his sister, Antoinette Mazzoni Kramar, reinforcing the family’s ongoing presence in the fine jewelry trade.

In addition to gemology, Orin is an accomplished filmmaker and visual storyteller. He is the creator of Sharing the Rough, a feature documentary that explores the global journey of gemstones from their origins to finished jewelry, highlighting the people, landscapes, and craftsmanship behind the trade. The film reflects Orin’s broader interest in transparency, ethics, and the human stories embedded in objects of value.

This combination of technical expertise and creative perspective shapes Orin’s work at Studio Gemological Laboratory, where he provides independent jewelry appraisals with clarity, precision, and discretion. His appraisals are designed to support insurance coverage, estate matters, and informed decision-making, and are prepared with professional objectivity and care.

Orin’s work is defined by a respect for both the material and emotional value of jewelry, and by a belief that accurate, well-documented appraisals help clients protect what matters most.
